Savoring Fall in Madison: A Food & Arts Adventure
Madison truly shines in the fall. Crisp mornings, colorful leaves, and those classic Midwest seasonal flavors make this a perfect time to slow down and enjoy what the city has to offer. Here’s an itinerary that blends food, art, and local experiences into one autumn day (or you can split it into a few weekends of fun!) to experience the very best of fall in Madison.
Morning at the Dane County Farmers’ Market
Saturdays and Wednesdays, early morning to early afternoon (through November)
Start your day at the Capitol Square market. Even in October, the stalls offer apples, squash, root vegetables, cheeses, breads, and pastries. Vendors and local businesses around the Capitol Square also have delicious seasonal offerings as well, making the farmer’s market a hotspot for all things fall and food.
Fall Arts & Culture in Madison
Gallery Night Madison
Friday, November 7, 2025 • 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM
In the afternoon and early evening, shift your focus to Madison’s arts scene. Stop by the Overture Center Galleries for rotating fall exhibitions, or plan for Gallery Night, when studios, cafés, and galleries across downtown Madison open their doors with receptions and artist talks.
Fall Performance Series — Wisconsin Union Theater, Orpheum Theater, Majestic Theatre
Check venue schedules (typically evenings, Thu–Sun)
If live performance is your preference, check the fall schedule for the Wisconsin Union Theater, Orpheum, or Majestic — they present concerts, dance, and theater events through the season.

Evening at Garver Feed Mill + GLEAM: Art in a New Light
Opening Night: Saturday, August 30, 2025 • 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM
Regular Viewings: Wednesdays–Saturdays, September 3 – October 25, 2025
– Entry starts at 7:30 PM in September; 6:30 PM in October
As dusk settles, head to Garver Feed Mill (often hosting pop-ups or events) for a snack or drink, then walk over to Olbrich Botanical Gardens for GLEAM. This outdoor art show turns the gardens into a glowing nighttime walk. The gardens are full of interesting foliage throughout the fall.
Farm-to-Table Dining
Seasonal Restaurant Menus — L’Etoile, Graze, Mint Mark, Heritage Tavern
After GLEAM, enjoy dinner at one of Madison’s celebrated farm-to-table restaurants. L’Etoile, Graze, Mint Mark, and Heritage Tavern tailor menus around seasonal produce and local farmers. Think dishes like roasted squash, wild mushrooms, cider-glazed meats, or apple-based desserts — flavors that echo the incredible produce at the farmer’s market.
A Sweet Finish
Bonus round: there’s always room for dessert or a sweet treat! Madison cafés and sweet shops roll out fall specials worth seeking out:
- Level Five Donuts for plant-based pumpkin and maple creations
- Ledger Coffee Roasters for their rich Molasses Fall Spice Latte (it’s better than a PSL)
- Gail Ambrosius Chocolatier for seasonal truffles made with pumpkin, caramel, and warming spices
- Chocolate Shoppe for apple cider donut or caramel apple pie ice cream
